SEBASTIAN – There’s been a lot of hype about red tide possibly arriving in Sebastian and Vero Beach, but it’s unlikely.

Low levels of red tide has been seen in some areas along the coast of Martin County, and higher levels at some St. Lucie County beaches, according to water samples taken by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversations Commission.

However, red tide may not make its way to Sebastian or Vero Beach because the southeast winds are expected to shift due to Hurricane Michael.

Some algae researchers say more southerly winds are predicted, moving red tide away from Indian River County and Florida.

Despite the hype, there hasn’t been any evidence of red tide seen in Sebastian or Vero Beach. We’re watching it closely and will provide updates when they are available.
