Local Man Loves Fishing, Especially for Red Snapper

Dan Higgins may be 81-years-old, but he is youthful when it comes to fishing, especially for red snapper.

Higgins just finished up three days of red snapper fishing with his friends in Sebastian.

“It’s a highly sought after fish, fun to catch and great on the dinner table. One more day to catch them on Friday, then back to Catch and Release,” Higgins told Sebastian Daily.

The 2020 Atlantic red snapper season is July 10-12 and July 17. Anglers are limited to one fish per person, per day, with no minimum size limit.

Higgins has his own boat that he calls “Mistress” and uses cut bait and squid to catch the fish. Higgins and his friends caught one red snapper each. He still uses an old Penn 113 reel.

“Too old to buy new stuff, my friends use other tackle,” he said.

Higgins keeps his boat at Outriggers in Micco, one of the best spots for boat slips. The marina sits on the Sebastian River and is surrounded by rock, making it an ideal quiet place to rent a boat slip.

“I try to fish a couple of times a month, but at 81, I have to pick my days,” Higgins said.
