Ready to enjoy the great outdoors without the need for a fishing license? Mark your calendars for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) license-free freshwater fishing weekend on April 6 and 7.
This special event opens up Florida’s abundant freshwater bodies—from tranquil lakes to meandering rivers—for everyone to enjoy without the usual requirement of a fishing license.
Tom Graef, the Director of the Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management at FWC, emphasizes the unique experience Florida offers to anglers. “Florida offers an experience seen nowhere else in the world through its abundant fishing opportunities,” he stated. “License-free fishing weekends help residents and visitors alike connect with friends and family while enjoying the nature Florida has to offer.”
During this weekend, all anglers, regardless of age or skill level, are invited to fish for their favorite freshwater species without a license. However, it’s important to note that all other fishing regulations, including seasons, bag, and size limits, will still apply.
Event Highlights and Family-Friendly Activities
Two standout family fishing events are scheduled to enhance the experience:
- Tenoroc Fish Management Area in Lakeland will host an event on April 6 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required by April 5. Attendees will enjoy free lunch provided by Publix Supermarkets and the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida. Youth aged 15 and under can also benefit from free bait and a limited supply of loaner rods and reels. A parent or guardian must accompany the youth participants.
- Florida Bass Conservation Center in Webster invites attendees on April 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear and bait. The event will feature a free lunch of hotdogs and hamburgers, courtesy of Vital Fleet Services.
