The local beaches are a haven for humans and wildlife alike. But these sandy shores become vital for endangered sea turtles and vulnerable waterbirds during the summer nesting season.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reminds beachgoers to be mindful and share the space with these amazing creatures. Here are some easy tips to ensure everyone has a happy and safe holiday.
Give Them Space:
- Walk around, not through, bird flocks. Give them at least 300 feet of space to avoid disturbing their eggs and chicks.
- Respect sea turtle nesting grounds. If you see one nesting, keep at least 50 feet away and don’t use flashlights. Hatchlings need space too!
- Follow posted signs. Critical Wildlife Areas are closed to the public to protect vulnerable nesting sites.
Clean Up After Yourself:
- Pack out all trash. Food scraps attract predators that can harm hatchlings and chicks.
- Fill in holes. These can be obstacles for nesting turtles.
- Remove beach furniture and toys before sunset. They can also be obstacles.
Minimize Light Pollution:
- Turn off lights or close curtains at night. Bright lights disorient nesting turtles and hatchlings.
Leave Fireworks to the Pros:
- Skip personal fireworks on the beach. The noise and lights can disrupt nesting birds and turtles. Enjoy a public fireworks display instead!
Keep Pets Leashed:
- Leave your dog at home if possible. Even friendly dogs can scare birds away from their nests.
