WASHINGTON — Beginning on January 1, 2026, Florida will implement new restrictions on what SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits can be used to purchase, as part of a USDA-approved waiver.
Specifically, SNAP recipients in the state will no longer be able to buy soda, energy drinks, candy, or prepared desserts (such as pre-packaged cakes, cookies, or donuts) with their benefits.
The modification intends to encourage better food choices and is one of several state-level waivers taking effect around the same time, affecting about 1.4 million people across five states, including Florida.
The waiver was approved by the USDA in August 2025 and is set to last for 2 years. There are also potential extensions and adjustments.
Florida retailers will need to update their point-of-sale terminal systems to enforce these rules, and SNAP users should check with their local Department of Children and Families office or the USDA website for full details on compliant items.
SNAP recipients are urged to focus on eligible staples like fruits, vegetables, dairy, meats, and grains to maximize their benefits under the new policy.
