NEW SMYRNA BEACH — Police arrested a man accused of pointing a handgun at several juveniles and threatening to shoot them during a confrontation on the Intracoastal Waterway over the weekend.
Christopher Evensen, 43, faces five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of improper exhibition of a dangerous weapon, according to the New Smyrna Beach Police Department. He was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail without incident.
The incident unfolded Saturday afternoon when juveniles on the water created a wake near Evensen’s white Key West boat, prompting him to become irate, police said. Multiple young victims reported that Evensen aimed the gun in their direction while yelling threats.
Witnesses, including several other juveniles nearby, corroborated the accounts, authorities added.
After the encounter, Evensen was spotted trailering his boat at the North Causeway Boat Ramp. Officers from the New Smyrna Beach Police Department, working with Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies, tracked his white Nissan Frontier pickup truck — still towing the boat — to a home, where they made the arrest.
No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.
