FORT PIERCE — Four people were shot and hospitalized Sunday afternoon in what authorities say was an ambush stemming from a Facebook marketplace deal gone wrong.
The incident took place around 1:15 p.m. in the 3600 block of Avenue R, where deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire. Preliminary investigations suggest a buyer arrived at the location intending to purchase an iPhone but was instead confronted by three suspects who opened fire in an apparent setup. A fifth person may have been involved, though details remain limited as the probe continues.
All four victims were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds, the sheriff’s office said. Their conditions were not immediately released, and no arrests had been announced by early evening. Detectives from the criminal investigations division have taken over the case and are canvassing the area for witnesses and evidence.
The shooting highlights the risks associated with in-person transactions arranged through online platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
Safety Tips
When selling or buying items on platforms such as Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, prioritize safety to avoid theft, scams, and dangerous situations. Based on common advice from experts and users, here are key tips to help ensure smooth, secure transactions:
- Meet in a public, well-lit location: Pick a location with a lot of people, like the parking lot at your local police station, a crowded coffee shop, or one of those official safe swap areas cops set up in many places.
- Bring a companion: If possible, have a friend or family member accompany you during the exchange. This adds an extra layer of security and can deter potential issues.
- Verify the other party’s profile: Before you set up a meetup, do a quick search of their Facebook profile (if it’s Marketplace) or just run a quick search online. You’re looking for a solid account that’s been around, with actual friends, pics, and some posts going on—having friends in common is always a plus. On Craigslist, ask for additional verification if something feels off.
- Inspect the item thoroughly: As a buyer, test the item (e.g., plug in electronics or check for damage) before paying. As a seller, be prepared to demonstrate that it works. Do a reverse image search on the listing photos to ensure they’re not stolen from elsewhere.
- Communicate through the platform: Use the platform’s built-in messaging, such as Facebook Messenger or Craigslist’s email relay. Avoid sharing your personal information, such as your phone number or email address, right away. Be alert for warning signs like rushed demands, calls for upfront payments, or strange links.
- Set a specific meeting time and don’t wait long: Agree on a firm time and location in advance. If the other person is late or doesn’t show, leave—don’t linger in one spot.
- Trust your instincts: If anything feels off—such as evasive answers, too-good-to-be-true deals, or pushy behavior—cancel the meetup. Report suspicious activity to the platform and, if needed, to local authorities.
