SEBASTIAN — Therese Fredericks, a resident of Pelican Landing Assisted Living community, will celebrate her 100th birthday on Friday, surrounded by staff and family who describe her as a beacon of quiet strength and gentle humor.
Born in Germany in 1925, Fredericks immigrated to the United States at age 4, arriving through Ellis Island in New York. She built a life centered on family, marrying the late John Fredericks and raising a daughter, Joy, and a son, Jack, both of whom have since died. She has a living son named Jeff.
“Through the years, Therese built a beautiful life rooted in love and family,” her family said. “One that would be filled with both challenges and rich enduring joys.”
Staff at Pelican Landing, where Fredericks is known affectionately as Terry, praised her enduring spirit. Christine, the resident life director, along with other employees, extended birthday wishes, noting Fredericks’ smile “lights up the room.”
Among her memorable sayings, often directed at caregivers: “Are you an angel because you sure look like one?” “Don’t quit, doll.” And, “Thank you, honey — it’s not even my birthday!”
“Though much of her memory has faded with time, her remembrance of mealtimes hasn’t,” the family said.
Katie, Fredericks’ granddaughter, shared the family’s appreciation for the staff’s care. “What a joy it is to have Terry as one of our residents!” the community statement added.
