WABASSO – The Wabasso fishing pier that sits parallel to the Wabasso Causeway is scheduled for demolition.
However, it won’t happen until next year after the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane season.
The pier, which is about 10 feet above the Indian River Lagoon, sustained heavy damage from Hurricane Matthew in October and has been a safety hazard ever since.
Knocking the pier down will cost $1.1 million, and rebuilding it could cost more than $1 million, according to estimates.
County officials hope to get state and federal grants to help pay for the demolition and the project to rebuild.
Indian River County commissioners approved spending of $49,200 to get the necessary permits.
The material from the pier will be used to create an artificial reef about three miles offshore, which will create new fishing opportunities.
