VERO BEACH — A U.S. Army veteran will review Kristin Hannah’s novel “The Women,” a story of a nurse’s experiences in the Vietnam War, at a free community event next month.
Michelle L. Auton, a veteran and current veteran service officer, is set to discuss the book at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 3 during the Book Review Breakfast at the Richardson Center on the Indian River State College campus, 6155 College Lane.
Sponsored by the Vero Beach branch of the American Association of University Women, the event highlights the often-overlooked sacrifices of women in military service, tying into the novel’s themes of friendship, patriotism and courage under fire.
Auton enlisted in the Army in 1989 after high school graduation. She served as a nuclear weapons specialist in Germany before qualifying as a combat medic with the 24th Infantry Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
After leaving the military, she specialized in senior care as a nationally certified dementia practitioner, Montessori dementia care professional and state-certified assisted living administrator. She now advocates for veterans and their families, volunteering extensively in the community.
The AAUW-Vero Beach has hosted these book review breakfasts for 40 years as a public service. Attendees are encouraged to donate new or gently used children’s books to support the group’s four Little Free Libraries.
The nonprofit organization is a 501(c)(3) charity. The event is open to the public at no cost.
