SEBASTIAN— Indian River County Parks, Recreation and Conservation is offering American Red Cross lifeguard certification classes this May at two local aquatic centers.
People who want to take the course must first pass a swim test. They need to complete the test on or before April 27.
The classes will take place at the North County Aquatic Center in Sebastian and the Gifford Aquatic Center in Vero Beach.
At the North County Aquatic Center, 9450 CR 512, Sebastian, FL 32958, the schedule is:
- Friday, May 1, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Saturday, May 2, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Sunday, May 3, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
At the Gifford Aquatic Center, 4895 43rd Ave., Vero Beach, FL 32967, the class meets:
- Monday, May 4, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
To join the course, participants must be at least 16 years old. They also need to pass a swim test that includes:
- Swimming 150 yards using front crawl or breaststroke
- Treading water for 2 minutes using only their legs
- Swimming another 50 yards
- Swimming 20 yards, diving to retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool, swimming back with the brick, and getting out of the pool without a ladder
The county is offering $250 scholarships to help cover the cost of the course. Participants must attend every class session to earn certification.
