INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River County Fire Rescue Hazardous Materials Team captured first place at the 12th annual Florida Hazardous Materials Team Competition, displaying elite skills in emergency response scenarios.
The event was held Wednesday at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center, and drew teams from across Florida and North Carolina. Competitors faced challenges designed to simulate real-world hazardous materials incidents by testing their ability to handle situations carefully and speed.
Judges evaluated teams across various categories, including screening for unknown substances, product hazard analysis, an escape room scenario, and a hazmat knowledge quiz. The Indian River squad stood out for its teamwork and expert skill after a full day of drills.
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication, skill and preparedness of our Hazardous Materials team,” said Indian River County Fire Chief David Johnson. “Their first-place finish brings pride to our department and highlights the professionalism and expertise we bring to the community we serve.”
The victory underscores the team’s extensive training regimen, which emphasizes public safety and operational readiness. County officials praised the group for its commitment to protecting residents, visitors and fellow first responders.
The Indian River County Board of County Commissioners issued a statement congratulating the team and expressing gratitude for their service.
