United Way of Indian River County is launching UPSTARTERS, a youth-led volunteer program designed to empower high school students in grades 9 through 12 to organize community projects, lead initiatives, and connect with local nonprofits.
The program’s first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 3:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the United Way Center Community Room. Snacks will be provided.
UPSTARTERS offers hands-on opportunities for students to support causes such as food distributions, beach cleanups, and sorting donations at thrift stores. Participants will gain leadership and teamwork skills while earning community service hours required for graduation.
“UPSTARTERS is more than just a way to earn hours – it’s about giving students the tools to create meaningful change in their community,” said Meredith Egan, chief executive officer of United Way of Indian River County. “These young leaders are the next generation of changemakers, and we’re here to help them grow.”
Monthly meetings will take place on the third Tuesday of each month at the United Way Center. Students will learn about upcoming service opportunities and collaborate with peers to make a positive impact.
The program provides multiple benefits, including community service hours, leadership development, and organizational experience that enhance college and job applications. Participants can also build connections with peers and local professionals and may request letters of recommendation to support future academic or career goals.
All high school students in grades 9 through 12 are eligible to join. Parental or guardian consent is required for those under 18.
