SEBASTIAN — A 6-year-old cat named Midnite narrowly escaped euthanasia after swallowing 26 hair ties that caused a life-threatening blockage, according to HALO No-kill Rescue Shelter.
The shelter in Sebastian received a call a few days ago about the cat, which had been signed over for euthanasia due to the obstruction. HALO No-Kill Rescue agreed to take her in and rushed her into surgery.
Veterinarians discovered the shocking cause was two dozen hair ties lodged in her stomach.
“Ever wondered where all your hair ties disappear to? Sometimes they end up in places you would never imagine. Like your pet’s stomach,” HALO posted on social media, sharing Midnite’s story to raise awareness.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by small household items to pets. Hair ties, rubber bands, strings, and similar objects can be swallowed and cause severe health issues.
Midnite survived the ordeal and is now recovering well. HALO staff reports she now attacks her food bowl ravenously at every meal.
“This sweet girl almost lost her life because of it. But Midnite was one of the lucky ones,” the rescue said. “She was given a second chance. Not every animal gets that.”
HALO urged pet owners to keep small items out of reach and monitor what animals might ingest. “It can save a life,” HALO No-Kill Rescue added.
