Sebastian is already a great town to live in and raise children. But, imagine if everyone did a little extra to make it even better. Let’s all do our part to make Sebastian even greater in 2020.
Here are six tips to get you started.
1) Be Kind & Patient
You never know what people are going through behind closed doors. It only takes a second to be kind & show someone you care.
Patience seems like a thing of the past as most people nowadays are all about instant gratification. Remember that car that speeds past you on US1, will most likely see you at the next red light.
2) Report crime when you see it happening
Whether it is petty theft, reckless driving, or something more serious, the sooner you call, the better. Never assume someone else has already called.
When you see an emergency call 911 or for non-emergencies, call the Sebastian Police Department at 772-589-5233, or the Indian River County Sheriff’s Department at 772-569-6700.
3) Introduce yourself to your neighbors
Introducing yourself to your neighbors can be helpful for many reasons.
It is always comforting knowing that if you have an emergency at home, there is someone close by that you can trust.
Additionally, it is helpful when you are out of town to have someone close by keeping an eye on your home. Make it a point to get their names and phone numbers, just in case of an emergency.
4) Pick up litter whenever you see it.
The best way to keep Sebastian beautiful is to keep it clean. In order to do this, pick up litter whenever you see it, even if it not yours. The more people see others doing it, the more likely they will be to start.
Pet owners are responsible for picking up their dog’s waste, no matter where they go. So, make sure you do. The City of Sebastian does a great job of making sure that pet owners have disposal bags in parks, jogging trails, and along the river.
5) Do your best to stop using one-time-use products.
Recycling is great, but you know what’s even better? Not using it in the first place. One time use products include, but are not limited to:
- Plastic Water bottles
- Single-serve coffee pods
- Disposable utensils
- Plastic bags
- Produce bags
- Menstrual products
6) Attend City Council Meetings
Last, but not least, attend City Council Meetings. Make your voice heard! If you do not voice your opinion about the issues that matter to you, you have no right to complain.
You must get to know your city council members. So, when it comes time to vote, you will be ready!
