VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach Theatre Guild will stage Jason Robert Brown’s musical “The Last Five Years,” an intimate two-person exploration of love and heartbreak, next month in its Black Box Theatre.
The production, directed by Ben Earman, is set to run from Nov. 6 through Nov. 15, with performances at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The show chronicles the five-year relationship between aspiring actress Cathy and novelist Jamie, with her story told in reverse chronological order and his unfolding forward, meeting at their wedding in the middle.
“The Last Five Years” features a score blending pop, jazz and classical influences, into the joys and struggles of modern relationships. The musical carries a PG-13 rating for mature themes, strong language and emotional intensity, according to the guild.
Tickets range from $29.75 to $35 for adults, with discounts available for veterans, students and members under 40. You can secure your seats now directly from the guild’s ticketing site.
The Vero Beach Theatre Guild, a community theater with over 60 years of productions, selected the show as part of its Season 68 lineup. Auditions were held in early September, drawing performers age 18 and older. Rehearsals began late last month.
Brown, a Tony Award-winning composer known for works like “Parade” and “The Bridges of Madison County,” originally premiered “The Last Five Years” off-Broadway in 2002. The Vero Beach staging incorporates updates to set the story in 2025.
