VERO BEACH — The United Way of Indian River County is recruiting volunteers to help low-income residents with free tax preparation services ahead of the 2026 filing season.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, known as VITA, offers no-cost filing for individuals and families earning $68,000 or less annually. Participants can claim key refunds and credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and American Opportunity Tax Credit, which provide vital financial support for working families and students.
No previous experience is required to volunteer. The United Way provides free IRS training and certification, along with flexible scheduling and staff support. The program relies on user-friendly software and detailed instructions to guide helpers through the process. Volunteers also build expertise in areas like finance, customer service and community outreach, with some eligible for continuing education credits.
“These volunteers make a remarkable difference for families and individuals in need, and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication,” said Meredith Egan, chief executive officer of the United Way of Indian River County. “As we look to the coming year, we’re calling on even more passionate individuals to join us in this rewarding work.”
VITA locations will open across the county from mid-January through April 2026. Prospective volunteers must complete a three-day training session at the United Way Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with dates to be announced soon.
