SEBASTIAN — The city of Sebastian has been honored as a 2025 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, recognizing its ongoing efforts to plant and maintain trees for community benefit.
The designation marks the 24th consecutive year Sebastian has earned the award, along with a Growth Award for expanded urban forestry initiatives, city officials said.
The Arbor Day Foundation, a global nonprofit, has planted more than 500 million trees in over 60 countries through its network of supporters and partners. This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Tree City USA program, which promotes healthier and more resilient communities through tree management.
“Trees are critical infrastructure, building resiliency and fostering good health in our nation’s cities,” said Michelle Saulnier, vice president of programs at the Arbor Day Foundation. “We’re proud Sebastian is among the Arbor Day Foundation’s growing network of communities dedicated to creating positive impact through trees.”
Urban trees help combat heat islands, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality and support mental and physical health, according to the foundation. Properly placed trees can also cut traffic noise, raise property values and lower energy bills.
Sebastian Mayor Fred Jones called the recognition a testament to the city’s environmental commitment. “Trees are the very lifeblood of our city and play an integral role in our local culture and vibrant ecosystems,” Jones said.
To qualify for Tree City USA status, communities must maintain a tree board or department, adopt a tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on forestry and hold an Arbor Day event.
The program operates in partnership with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Forest Service.
The Arbor Day Foundation, founded more than 50 years ago, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on inspiring tree planting and conservation worldwide.
