INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Nopetro Energy opened southern Florida’s first facility to convert landfill gas into renewable natural gas last week, marking a milestone in the region’s push toward cleaner energy sources.
The $42 million plant, developed through a public-private partnership with Indian River County, captures methane from the county’s landfill and purifies it into biogas suitable for injection into existing natural gas pipelines.
Renewable natural gas, or RNG, is a low-carbon alternative to conventional fuel and can power buses, trucks, and homes without requiring modifications to the infrastructure. It will serve customers from the South Vero Corridor to Indian River Shores via Florida City Gas’ network.
“Opening this facility is a major step, not just for Nopetro’s growing natural gas production and distribution network, but for Indian River County,” said Jorge Herrera, CEO of Nopetro Energy. “We believe in building facilities that support and give back to the cities where they stand.”
Herrera added that the site acts as a catalyst for growth, resilience, and energy independence along the Treasure Coast, benefiting local families and businesses.
In its initial weeks of operation, the facility has purified biogas to more than 95% methane, surpassing the 90% industry standard for use in vehicles and residences. Construction and ongoing activities have generated employment opportunities for local contractors and vendors.
Indian River County Commission Chairman Joseph Flescher praised the collaboration, calling it a model for leveraging private investment to drive innovation and local investment.
“This partnership highlights the value of working with the private sector to bring innovation and investment to Indian River County,” Flescher said. “It’s a responsible use of resources that supports local families, strengthens our economy, and ensures access to dependable energy.”
Engineering firm Mead & Hunt handled design, procurement, and construction for the project, drawing on prior experience in similar ventures.
Nopetro, founded in 2008, operates 13 renewable gas fueling stations across Florida and is expanding nationwide. The company focuses on RNG production from landfills and wastewater plants, supplying fuel for transit fleets, including a full-system partnership with the Central Florida Transit Authority.
As a vertically integrated provider, Nopetro designs, builds, finances, and operates RNG plants and stations, helping governments and companies transition to more affordable and cleaner alternatives to diesel.
