DELAND — A homeowner in rural Central Florida shot and killed a black bear that had broken into his home, authorities said Friday.
The incident unfolded early Friday morning in a neighborhood off Ponderosa Avenue in Lake County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The bear wandered into the residence, prompting the occupant to fire at it in self-defense, FWC officials reported.
No injuries were reported among the home’s residents, and the agency confirmed the bear died at the scene. Details about how the animal gained entry or what led it to the property remain under investigation, but FWC noted the area is known for occasional bear sightings due to its proximity to wooded regions.
Black bears are common in Florida, with an estimated population of about 4,000 statewide. Wildlife experts urge residents to secure trash and avoid leaving food sources that might attract the animals. This marks the latest in a series of human-bear encounters in the state, though fatal shootings inside homes are rare.
FWC spokeswoman Tammy Sapp said in a statement that the agency is reviewing the circumstances but emphasized that Florida law allows for the use of lethal force if a person reasonably believes it’s necessary to protect themselves or others from imminent harm.
Authorities removed the bear’s remains for examination. No charges are expected against the homeowner.
