SEBASTIAN — The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is set to host a one-day boating safety training class later this month, educating boaters on safe operations and legal requirements under Florida and federal laws.
The class, taught by certified instructors from the auxiliary, runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 24 at American Legion Post 189, located at 807 Louisiana Ave. in Sebastian.
Registration is required and can be arranged by contacting Jim Vaughn at 772-559-9549 or jimavaughn@gmail.com. The fee is $25 per adult, with teens admitted free of charge. Lunch will be provided to participants.
The curriculum covers essential topics including boat familiarization, getting underway, navigation rules, safe boating practices, federal and state regulations, and emergency handling procedures.
Those who complete the course successfully will receive a Boater Education ID Card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Under Florida law, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, who operates a powerboat must complete such a class and carry the card while on the water.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary, established by Congress in 1939, serves as the uniformed civilian arm of the U.S. Coast Guard, supporting missions in areas like boating safety and education. More details are available at www.cgaux.org.
