TAMPA — AAA is activating its Tow to Go program this holiday season to curb impaired driving, offering free rides and tows for drivers and their vehicles in select states from Christmas Eve through the start of the new year.
The service, available to both members and non-members, runs from 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, until 6 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2. It provides a confidential tow and ride to a safe location within a 10-mile radius for those who’ve had too much to drink, serving as a last-resort option when plans for a designated driver or rideshare fail.
“The holiday season is a time for joy and celebration, but it also carries a greater risk of impaired driving,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “AAA urges Floridians to plan ahead and make responsible choices to keep the holidays both safe and festive. Tow to Go is our gift to the community, ensuring everyone gets home safely to enjoy the holidays with their loved ones.”
To access the program, callers can dial (855) 2-TOW-2-GO. It’s offered in Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota, Nebraska, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Denver in Colorado, Charlotte in North Carolina, and Fort Wayne and South Bend in Indiana. The service cannot be scheduled ahead and is intended only as a backup.
AAA emphasizes the program’s role in preventing alcohol-related crashes, which account for nearly one-third of all U.S. traffic fatalities. In 2023, more than 12,000 people died in such incidents — roughly one every 42 minutes.
The initiative aligns with AAA’s “Crashes Hit Different” campaign, which highlights the human toll behind statistics, noting that each crash affects real people like parents, friends or neighbors. “These tragedies are preventable, and programs like Tow to Go are part of the solution,” the organization said in a statement.
AAA – The Auto Club Group, the second-largest AAA club in North America, serves over 13 million members in 14 states and two U.S. territories. It offers roadside assistance, insurance, financial services and travel options, among other benefits. The national AAA federation has more than 65 million members across the U.S. and Canada, focusing on mobility freedom and traffic safety improvements.
