Sebastian River High School Navy JROTC Cadets Visit SEAL Museum and Ft Pierce Coast Guard Station

Mr. Andy Brady speaks to SRHS NJROTC Cadets about the history of the Navy SEALs

Cadets from Sebastian River High School (SRHS) headed south last week to visit the Navy SEAL Museum and Fort Pierce Coast Guard Station.

The museum visit gave cadets an opportunity to learn about the contributions of Navy SEALs to US Defense throughout history. They also had an opportunity to see the equipment the SEALs use in the operational environment. Some cadets elected to run the SEAL obstacle course, competing for the best time.

“We always love having the younger folks come through,” said Andy Brady, the SEAL Museum Community Outreach Coordinator. “It gives me great hope and confidence in the future of our country to see kids who care to learn about our nation’s history.”

Visiting Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce allowed the NJROTC cadets a chance to see an operational unit in real life. They learned about the duties and responsibilities of Coast Guard personnel, including maintaining aids to navigation, search and rescue missions, and maritime interdiction. In addition, cadets toured the station’s command operations center, USCG Cutter SEA HORSE, and a small boat unit.

“We really enjoy giving these tours to youth,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Kevin Maguire. “Whether or not they decide to pursue a career in the Coast Guard isn’t important. It’s good for them as citizens to know about their Coast Guard and how we serve our country.”

Cadet Emily Place said, “I liked the USCG tour because it opened up possibilities for me.”

“I liked that the officers let us have hands-on experience with some of the equipment, for example the water pump they let us set up.” added Cadet Lily Roberts.

The purpose of NJROTC is to instill in students of secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. Cadets also participate in community service for various local events, providing assistance to event organizers and encouraging participation in community events.
