Letters to the Editor: We deserve Council members who can admit when they’re wrong

Damien Gilliams and Pamela Parris

We have several letters to publish this week. More will be published tomorrow. This one is about the new PAC group set to recall council members Damien Gilliams and Pamela Parris.

Dear Sebastian Daily,

I’m a part of a group, a Political Action Committee, that wants to unseat two members of the Sebastian City Council, Damien Gilliams and Pamela Parris. We believe they shouldn’t be part of the governing body representing the City of Sebastian.

Prior to the current “normal” of social distancing, our group had a get together at a local establishment to meet each other and discuss why we were there. Several got up to speak, and many asked questions as to the procedures and methods needed to achieve our goal of recalling Gilliams and Parris.

There’s a phrase that’s become something of a slogan, “We deserve better!” We deserve Council members who have the humility to admit when they’re wrong. We deserve Council members who exemplify the very best we have to offer. We deserve Council members who will treat each person they come across with respect and not make unfounded accusations.

I recall times when Damien Gilliams would confront members of the City Council during meetings, demanding accountability, demanding resignations. The tables have turned, haven’t they?

Not long after our gathering, everyone’s focus was put on slowing the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic we’re still experiencing. The health and safety of everyone are of paramount importance, but we’re still here. Our plans may be delayed a bit, but our efforts will not be stopped.

We will fight for Sebastian’s future and need your support. If you’re interested in helping our effort, check out our page on Facebook. We deserve better. We are Sebastian Voters Against Gilliams and Parris.
