Brevard County now has its first presumptive positive case of coronavirus, according to the Florida Department of Health.
A presumptive positive result is when a patient has tested positive by a local public health laboratory, but those results are still pending confirmation at a CDC lab.
“The arrival of coronavirus in Brevard is neither a surprise nor catastrophic. The county has been taking preventative actions since January, actions which have been expanded in recent days. The county and our partner agencies have all necessary resources and support personnel to address this occurrence,” Brevard County Commission Chair Bryan Lober told Sebastian Daily.
Additional information on whether the virus was travel-related, as well as gender and age of the person infected, is not immediately available.
The news comes barely a week after Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency following the state’s first coronavirus disease-related deaths.
This past week, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. The past Friday, President Donald Trump declared coronavirus a national emergency.
As of Monday evening, there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Sebastian or Indian River County.
Florida has confirmed 142 cases of coronavirus across the state.
Earlier today, a few Sebastian businesses are preparing for a temporary shut down. Florida may be joining other states to close bars and restaurants. Gov. DeSantis said he would make that decision on Tuesday morning.
