The Vero Beach Police Department is warning citizens of a new lottery scam that was brought to their attention on Wednesday.
“It is a variation of a lottery scam and is distributed through mail. In this scam, a victim receives a letter from American Family Publishers, allegedly a company out of Nebraska,” the VBPD said in a statement.
In the letter, the Indian River County victim is informed that they won $2.5 million and a brand new vehicle. The letter instructs them to call a representative to claim your winnings.
Upon making contact with a representative via telephone, they request that you mail them a check with a specific amount (in this case $1,400) to claim your prize.
This fraudulent company or individual will then cash your check, as well as gain access to your account to utter forged documents or make unauthorized payments.
Please be very vigilant about any correspondence from a company claiming that you won a prize.
The police department warns Vero Beach residents not to send any payment in advance.
