Sebastian man charged with 2 counts of DUI manslaughter for crash

SEBASTIAN – After a two-month investigation by the Sebastian Police Department, they have made an arrest involving a traffic homicide last September on CR-512. The driver and passenger of the motorcycle were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police told Sebastian Daily that they arrested Edward Ray Wheeler, 64 of Sebastian, Wednesday on two counts of felony DUI Manslaughter.

The traffic crash killed Lawrence C. Rubino and Teresa G. Calhoun on the night of September 13, 2018.

The investigation revealed that Wheeler had a blood-alcohol level of 0.29 grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood (legal limit is 0.08 grams per 100 milliliters of blood) at the time of the crash.

The fatal crash involved a motorcycle and an SUV at the 400 block of Sebastian Blvd.

Wheeler was traveling east on Sebastian Blvd., at the same time that Rubino and Calhoun were traveling west on Sebastian Blvd on a grey Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Wheeler made a left turn in the path of Rubino and Calhoun. The front of the SUV made contact with the left side of the motorcycle, causing Rubino and Calhoun to be ejected from the motorcycle.

Rubino was pronounced deceased on scene and Calhoun was transported to Sebastian River Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased by medical staff.

Wheeler was booked at the Indian River County Jail and is being held on a $150,000 bond.
