SEBASTIAN – The Fellsmere Police Department and other agencies are notifying residents about an FPL telephone scam that’s hitting our area.
“A resident reported he received a phone call on 9/25 from someone claiming to be from FPL. The conversation resembled the FPL scam,” Fellsmere Police said in a statement.
Some residents in Sebastian and Vero Beach are also receiving similar calls.
As previously reported by Sebastian Daily, most of the calls have been to homes, but the scammers are also targeting businesses. One local business said FPL called him and said his bill was outstanding and a truck was on its way to cut off his power. The caller also knew the account number.
“Residents are encouraged to call FPL directly should they receive any suspicious calls regarding payment for their power service,” police said.
Phone scammers posing as FPL employees are targeting customers. These scammers are using false phone numbers that could appear on a caller ID to be FPL. They are also using a recording of the FPL customer service phone message to make them sound legitimate.
During the call, the scammers threaten to shut the power off unless a payment is made immediately with a Green Dot MoneyPak card. These calls are not from FPL.
“We will never call and demand credit card information or take Green Dot MoneyPak cards as payment. In fact, we do not ask for any personal information from you unless you initiate the contact. If you ever receive a strange call and are in doubt, hang up and call us at the phone number listed at the bottom of your FPL bill,” Florida Power & Light said in a statement.
This scam is hitting utility companies nationwide.
