VERO BEACH – A 38-year-old man was killed Thursday night at the intersection of State Road 60 and 53rd Avenue, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Dennis Wayne Hicks was shot and killed, investigators say. A man driving his son said he believes it was a road rage incident.

The witness said something was going on between Hicks and the driver of another vehicle when shots were fired.

A male driver fired several shots from his vehicle, fatally shooting Hicks driving beside him.

“The suspect did call 911 and reported what happened,” said Lt. Thomas Raulen, spokesman for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. “He and a female passenger waited for investigators.”

Hicks was the occupant of the first vehicle. Deputies say the occupants of the second vehicle, a man and a woman, were questioned for hours.

While the scene remains active, and additional evidence is gathered, the couple was released without charges.

Deputies said the driver of a third vehicle witnessed the shooting.

The Sheriff’s Office took both the cars of the suspected shooter and the victim into evidence as part of the continued investigation.

The case is still under investigation.
