VERO BEACH – Employees at the Vero Beach Family Dollar located at 4490 43rd Avenue called the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office to report an armed robbery.
Two employees said they were getting ready to close the Vero Beach store when a man in a wheelchair asked for their assistance in retrieving a bag of potato chips.
When one of the employees retrieved a bag of potato chips, the man in the wheelchair stood up and pointed a semi-automatic pistol at them, according to the report.
The suspect demanded them to lock the front door, or he would shoot them.
After the door was locked, the man demanded access to the cash registers and the safe.
The man then asked both employees to get on the ground and put their hands behind their backs. He then tied them up using plastic zip ties around their ankles and wrists.
The suspect then fled the Vero Beach business. The employees continued to wait for about 10-15 minutes until they thought the man was gone.
The man is described as a black male, about 35 to 40 years old, 6 feet 2 inches tall, wearing a red shirt with a black undershirt, blue or black jeans, a black hat, and one foot wrapped up with a medical wrap.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this case.
