The Sebastian River High School Sharks Varsity Baseball team lost their first game of the season 0-2 to the Vero Beach Indians. But it was one heck of a game, with both teams playing well and ending the night praying together.

Sebastian High School’s Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch started the game off with the first pitch season.

“It was a great game and a nice community event! The boys played hard but came up a little short on hits” “all things considered, we are happy to be playing safely amidst a pandemic,” Upchurch told Sebastian Daily.

It was a tight game with some fantastic defense plays by the Sharks, especially in the outfield by Trey Rainey and Nate Martin. Rainey caught a fly ball while sliding on his back.

Rainey and Martin collided in the outfield while going for the same ball. The large crowd was in suspense, wondering if either one was injured. They went wild as Martin raised his arm, showing he caught the ball.

Vero Beach Fighting didn’t commit a single error in the field. Ryan Srigley led Vero Beach with two hits in three at-bat.

Shark’s Pitchers

Kalib Colon was the starting pitcher for the Sebastian River Sharks and recorded nine outs in three innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out three. Peyton Prescott pitched the last 4 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and striking out two players.

Indian’s Pitcher

Jake Nolan, #17, had an excellent night on the mound, surrendering zero runs on zero hits over seven innings and stroke out 14.

My favorite part of the night was watching the players and coaches come together infield and pray as a sign of camaraderie.
