An Indian River County resident recently received a long rambling text message from someone claiming to be Sheriff Eric Flowers threatening to arrest her over a car.

The message, filled with spelling and grammatical errors, threatened the woman that the sender would use facial recognition on her and that there was nowhere for her to run.

The victim was confused by the text and brought her cell phone to the Sheriff’s Department and spoke with a deputy who reviewed it. The law enforcement officer assured her the text was not from the Sheriff or anyone else from the agency and told her not to respond.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the public that they will never reach out to you via texts or phone calls about an impending arrest or warrant or anything of the sort.

So, please reach out to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Department if you receive scam phone calls or texts, so they can alert the general public and investigate the situation.

Reaching out to law enforcement about these situations can help others in our community to not become victims.

Indian River County Sheriff’s Department’s non-emergency number is (772) 978-6240.
