SEBASTIAN – A lot of people have been asking if schools will be closed Thursday and Friday in Indian River County because of Hurricane Irma, including Vero Beach High School and Sebastian River High School.

We just found out at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday that Hurricane Irma has prompted school officials to close all Indian River County schools.

St. Edward’s School in Vero Beach is closing its campus at 4 p.m. Wednesday, school officials said.

“In an abundance of caution, we want to give all of our families the time they need to respond to Hurricane Irma,” Mark Rendell, superintendent of Indian River County School District, said in a statement. “This will also allow us to prepare schools that may be used as shelters if necessary.”

Vero Beach and Sebastian River high school football games and all other school activities in Indian River County are canceled Thursday and Friday.

Indian River County school will reopen depending on the aftermath of the storm, and will be announced as soon as a decision can be made.
