Witnesses described it as a “dark cloud of bees” Sunday that landed on a boat docked at the Captain Hirams Resort in Sebastian.
“There had to be 2,000 bees flying towards the boat, and they just stayed there. They probably followed the queen,” a boater said.
The center console boat appeared fine other than the bees under its shade roof. No one was stung or hurt by the bees as they took up temporary residence on the boat.
“Marty Melino did a great job of removing them safely! I even got to see the queen,” Brian LaPersonerie told Sebastian Daily.
Marty Melino, who runs the Flip Flop Bee Farm Facebook page, did an outstanding job removing the honey bees. It didn’t take long, and the bees have a new home.
“They are all safe in their new home,” Melino told Sebastian Daily.
Bees usually land on the underside of the boat’s canvas cover, as we saw at Captain Hirams. When the bees land, the boat is docked. They usually don’t land while the vessel is moving.
What to do if bees land on your boat
Don’t spray them with water or try to kill them. It could put you or others in danger, especially if people are allergic.
Sometimes the bees will fly away on their own. However, it’s best to have a professional come out and remove them humanely, such as the Flip Flop Bee Farm.
