On Wednesday, 83 dogs boarded a plane and made their way to safety at the HALO No-Kill Rescue Shelter in Sebastian, Florida.
The flight was funded by the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Wings of Rescue. GreaterGood.org provided the crates and an in-kind as well as a $10,000 grant for veterinary care and staffing the emergency shelter.
The incredible journey was also made possible by the Humane Society of Broward, Loving Friends Animal Transport, Marcus Kramer D.V.M., and the HALO No-Kill Rescue Shelter, located at 710 Jackson St. in Sebastian.
The Humane Society of Grand Bahama did their best to keep over 300 dogs, and more than 100 cats alive. Some of the animals were already adopted, and others were brought there while their families went to shelters.
Sadly, the Humane Society of Grand Bahama, built-in 2008, flooded, and over 200 dogs and more than 50 cats lost their lives.
Words can not describe the emotions that ran through me last night. Jacque Petrone, the Founder of the Halo No-Kill Rescue, her employees and numerous volunteers did a fantastic job during the process of getting the rescues checked into HALO.
The dogs had a very long day that went as follows:
First, were flown from the Humane Society of Grand Bahama to Fort Lauderdale. Next, they were transported to an RV & Van and driven to HALO in Sebastian. Finally, they were taken out one by one by HALO’s dog trainers & volunteer so they could go potty and be check out by Marcus Kramer, D.V.M.
What will happen to the Bahama Rescues?
They will all be quarantined for two weeks, to prevent the spread of disease. Next, they will have their pictures taken, and be placed up for adoption on their HALO No-Kill Rescue website.
What can you do to help?
Now through September 14, 2019, HALO No-Kill Rescue is waving their adoption fees for the dogs that were in the shelter before receiving the Bahama rescues. So, make sure you come by and adopt!
If you are unable to adopt, consider donating. Right now, HALO needs bedding, cleaning supplies, and money.
