Date for Unveiling New POW MIA Monument in Sebastian, Florida

Riverview Park in Sebastian, Florida

The Sons of The American Legion-Squad 189 has announced the date and time for unveiling the new POW-MIA monument in Sebastian, Florida.

On February 26, 2023, at 1 p.m., the new Prisoner of War-Missing in Action Monument will be held at Riverview Park in Sebastian. The public is welcome to attend.

“The public is invited to attend, and we ask that they bring children and grandchildren so that they learn,” Past Commander Peter Puzzo told Sebastian Daily.

The monument was the idea of Puzzo, who got the Squadron to raise funds to engrave a piece of black granite.

The mission of the Operation is to identify and memorialize local veterans’ graves with a bronze military marker and the American flag.

On Veterans Day and Memorial Day, local volunteers visit the Brookside, Winter Beach, and Sebastian cemeteries to replace worn American flags and/or insert military grave markers on previously identified military grave sites.

Since October 2014, over six thousand flags have been distributed throughout the grounds of these cemeteries, funded through local community businesses and donations. The cost for these materials exceeds six thousand dollars yearly.

The Squadron now has a new project they wish to share with our community.

Since WWI, more than 82,000 Americans are still unaccounted for from Wars and Conflicts. The Squadron takes this opportunity to remind everyone to spare no cost or effort in repatriating those brave Sons & Daughters of America who has been far away from home and their loved ones.

“This small gesture is set here, in our Park, to remember and honor the devotion and bravery of those who have fought for our freedoms and as yet, have not come home to rest. This project was completely funded through local donations,” the Squadron said in a statement.
