City Councilman Damien Gilliams Files Lawsuit to Stop Recall

According to court records in Indian River County, Sebastian City Councilman Damien Gilliams has filed a lawsuit attempting to stop the recall.

The lawsuit comes one day after Chief Judge Lawrence M. Mirman scheduled a special recall election for September 9, 2020, to remove Damien Gilliams, Pamela Parris, and Vice-Mayor Charles Mauti from public office.

Sebastian Daily reached out to legal experts about the lawsuit. A local attorney agreed to comment on the condition of anonymity.

“He needs to have a basis of the lawsuit, not just because he doesn’t want to be recalled. The only person that can stop the recall is Chief Judge Mirman, and he won’t. There’s nothing that will stop this recall,” the attorney told Sebastian Daily.

People on social media are saying Damien Gilliams is only trying to intimidate citizens once again, to scare people away from the polls. Gilliams is once again going to cost City taxpayers more money in further litigation.

Many citizens have accused Gilliams of voter intimidation in the past.
