Celebrating Grandparents’ Day with Covid Precautions – September 12

Grandparents Day in Sebastian, Florida.

Grandparents Day in Sebastian, Florida.

Grandparents’ Day is this Sunday, September 12, 2021, and with Covid still lingering, most families will be celebrating with extra precautions. But, don’t stress, there are still plenty of ways to show your grandparents some love.

Ways to Celebrate Grandparents Day during Covid:

  1. Perform a song via Facetime or another social media platform.
  2. Make your grandparents something that incorporates pictures of yourself or images with them: a magnet, placemat, or photo collage.
  3. Interview your grandparents about when they were growing up. Times have changed quite a bit, and kids will be fascinated to hear just how much and give them stories to tell their children.
  4. Bake a tasty treat and deliver it to their door.
  5. Send a loving homemade card.
  6. Make a family tree or scrapbook.
  7. Enjoy an outdoor meal.

Who came up with Grandparents Day?

Russell Capper, 9, came up with grandparents Day in 1969. The young man sent President Richard Nixon a letter advocating for a day to pay tribute to all grandparents.

Then, in 1978, eight years later, West Virginia Senator Jennings Randolph recruited members of the Senate to make the young boy’s idea a reality. As a result, on August 3, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation to make Grandparents Day a national observance each fall.

Whatever you end up doing this year on Grandparent’s Day, make it memorable!
