Why Sebastian gas prices keep soaring

SEBASTIAN – Expect higher gas prices in Sebastian because of “planned and unplanned” refinery maintenance.

The price of gas has always been higher in Sebastian than other cities such as Vero Beach and Palm Bay. But the pain at the pump will become a little more irritating.

AAA predicts the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline will rise another 10 cents in the coming days.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the lowest price for gas in Sebastian was Speedway at $2.74. All other gas stations, including Walmart, was selling it for $2.75 by 1:30 p.m.

“Both planned and unplanned refinery maintenance, rising demand, and the switch to summer gasoline continue to contribute to the seasonal springtime jump at the pump,” AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said.

Jenkins says based on current conditions; gas prices will likely peak sometime between Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day weekend.

In January, the price of gas in Sebastian was at $2 per gallon before it jumped 20 cents in two days. In early March, we reported the price jumped 25 cents in 10 days.

Buckle up, Sebastian.
