VERO BEACH – About twenty years ago, WebVan and Home Grocer were the grocery delivery kings, offering a service to deliver food right into homes in larger cities like Los Angeles and Atlanta. However, neither company survived and eventually filed for bankruptcy.
Walmart is now set to pick up where the grocery delivery industry ended. The retailer wants to deliver groceries to your door beginning this fall.
Amazon already delivers inside your home, but they will only put non-grocery packages in a home, garage, or car trunk.
Walmart’s new delivery strategy is aimed to compete with Amazon by using newer technology. For example, employees will wear a camera similar to those worn by law enforcement. While on camera, it will record the employee permitted to enter the customer’s home and stock their pantry with groceries.
The Walmart customer will then be able to watch a live video stream of the walmart employee and grant them access to the their home remotely.
Information about how much the service could cost shoppers will be released before the program launches in the fall.
The option to have groceries delivered to your door in Indian River County is perfect for people who are too busy, or retirees that have trouble getting around. Moreover, it could change how everyone shops for groceries in the future.
At a time when stealing from Walmart’s self-checkout is at an all-time high, the retail giant may be pushing for the new service to reduce theft.
