SEBASTIAN – A person can drive their car to Palm Bay or Vero Beach and pay anywhere from $1.94 to $1.99 for a gallon of gas.
Gas prices in Sebastian, Florida have remained higher than neighboring cities for all of 2018. However, gas stations out west on CR-512 that were once .75 cents more per gallon have caught on and lowered their prices.
We’re not sure if they did this was due to our questioning why someone would want to fill-up at their gas stations for .75 cents more than driving north to the next exit in Palm Bay.
The cheapest gas around continues to be RaceTrac in West Melbourne for $1.94 per gallon. The lowest gas price in Sebastian is $2.08 at Walmart and Cumberland Farms. Vero Beach is $1.99 per gallon at Chevron.
While some people don’t mind paying more for the same gas in Sebastian, others have made the drive to Palm Bay or West Melbourne. They are people who drive a lot, and middle-class workers who want to save.
Some people say “taxes are higher here in Sebastian, that’s why we pay more.” That’s not accurate at all. Maybe that’s what the gas stations want people to think.
We have reached out to everyone we could for answers, including a state inspector, local politicians, and the gas stations. The answer to why we have higher gas prices in Sebastian than Vero Beach or Palm Bay is diluted and foggy. There is no answer. We’re told it’s “market price” and as long as we’re not in a State of Emergency, it’s not “price gouging.”
We’re at the mercy of the gas stations because people need it to get around. It’s not like having a choice to buy chicken at one store than another when the price is too high.
Sebastian gas prices are dropping, and they are at the most competitive rate we’ve seen recently. We could be seeing the price drop below $2 very soon.
