VERO BEACH, Florida – A Vero Beach man who was arrested for DUI tells a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol that he was drinking at a friends house where they were arguing about President Trump and communism.

The trooper observed the man, identified as 72-year-old Wilmer Lochrie, driving a vehicle in the center lane on U.S. Highway 1 and without any lights.

After initiating a traffic stop on the vehicle, the trooper immediately smelled the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage.

When the trooper asked Lockrie for his driver’s license, he stated that he did not have one because it was suspended about 10 years ago. When asked why it was suspended, Lockrie said, “Because it’s suspended,” according to the report.

Lockrie’s speech was very slurred, and at times hard for the trooper to understand, but stated he was on his way home from a friend’s home, “We were enjoying ourselves,” the report said. He also said they were arguing about “Trump and Commies (communism).”

The trooper found out Lockrie’s license was suspended in July 2005. Lockrie admitted that he had an “adult cocktail about 4 hours ago.” He was unable to keep his balance while speaking to the Florida trooper.

Lockrie told the trooper the single cocktail was a rum & coke that his friends bought for him. When asked how big his one drink was, he said, “I guess pretty substantial.”

After agreeing to participate in a standardized field sobriety excericses, the trooper placed Lockrie under arrest for driving under the influence and driving with a revoked license.

Lockrie was transported to the Indian River County Jail without incident.
