VERO BEACH, Florida – A 23-year-old man was arrested for DUI on Sunday in Vero Beach after driving erratically and tailgating an Indian River County Sheriff’s deputy.
Bradley Earl Petticrew, who was driving a white Mitsubishi, was seen driving erratically in Vero Beach. Petticrew then began tailgating a marked IRC Sheriff’s vehicle.
The deputy said Petticrew was following “so closely that at times the front headlights disappeared from view” in his mirror, according to the report.
A traffic stop was initiated in the 3000 block of 45th Street. The deputy observed an open Mikes Harder Lemonade can in the center console. Petticrew quickly placed an object under his left leg, which was later identified as an “automatic opening pocket knife.”
The deputy could clearly smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Petticrew’s breath. There were wet spots on his clothing, consistent with spilling his beverage before the traffic stop.
Petticrew said the beverage did not belong to him, and that the “owner of the vehicle left the drink inside.” The deputy observed the can to be cold to the touch, indicating it was recently opened.
After conducting several roadside sobriety exercises, the deputy determined that Petticrew was impaired.
Petticrew was arrested and transported to the Indian River County Jail where he was charged with 1 count of Driving Under the Influence, and 1 count of Resisting Arrest without Violence.
