VERO BEACH, Florida – The Vero Beach Police Department received a call from the Cumberland Farms at 1690 U.S. Highway 1 about a retail theft.

The store clerk observed an older man stealing a beer by walking out without paying for it. The Vero Beach Cumberland Farms then called the police.

Officers arrived and made contact with a man matching the description. Ralph Boardman, 63, admitted to the theft while consuming the 23.5-ounce beer in front of police.

“I’m an alcoholic and I have to do what I have to do,” Boardman told officers. He also stated that he didn’t have any money on him to pay for the beverage, so we walked in and took it.

The store manager watched Boardman enter the store and walk out with the beer, according to the report. The alcohol beverage is valued at $2.99.

Boardman was transported to the Indian River County Jail where he was charged with retail theft.
