VERO BEACH, Florida – An 82-year-old man who was arrested for felony aggravated assault allegedly opened his Vero Beach residence to a homeless woman in exchange for sexual favors.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at the Vero Beach home about a disturbance.
On the couch was Philip Roberts, who was drinking an alcoholic beverage. The victim came out of the bedroom in tears.
The victim told deputies that she moved in about a week ago because she was homeless. Roberts agreed to let her stay at his place in exchange for helping “around the house,” according to the report.
Roberts was allegedly drinking all day and had consumed approximately 7 or 8 large alcoholic beverages. When the drinks were gone, he allegedly barged into the room holding a large kitchen knife and asked the victim to leave and buy more alcohol.
The victim then said Roberts took the knife and cut the top of her left forearm. The female victim then called the police.
According to the victim, Roberts was also trying to get sexual favors from her in exchange for letting her stay at his Vero Beach residence.
Deputies then made contact with Roberts, who appeared to be very intoxicated. He said he never threatened her with a knife, but that “she needs to leave,” the report said.
Roberts was arrested and transported to the Indian River County Jail. Bond set at $1,000.
