VERO BEACH, Florida – The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a driver who kept falling asleep in the Checkers drive-through restaurant.
The caller told police that the driver was stopped in the roundabout at the location.
A deputy observed a silver GMC pickup blocking the roadway. The vehicle was running, and the driver was asleep inside the truck.
Michael Ellis was identified as the driver of the vehicle. As deputies approached the vehicle, they saw vomit running down the driver’s door and onto the ground.
Ellis had vomit still on his beard, and his face was very flushed. A deputy was able to wake the driver up and noticed a strong odor of alcohol emitting from the pickup.
Each time the deputy asked for Ellis’ license, he went to grab for his wallet, but started using his phone instead. Ellis struggled with the phone as he was trying to enter a passcode to unlock it.
After conducting a few field sobriety tests, the deputy took Ellis into custody for DUI.
Ellis then admitted he was too drunk to be driving. His readings were .160% BAC and .158% BAC.
