VERO BEACH, Florida – The management at Holiday Inn in Vero Beach called police after they entered one of the rooms to clean and found an ounce of marijuana.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and could smell the odor of marijuana coming from one of the rooms. The odor was obviously from someone smoking from inside one particular room.

The deputies knocked on the door, and 21-year-old Darius Hemphill opened and then attempted to slam the door once he saw it was the sheriff’s office. He appeared terrified as he was detained.

Hemphill admitted to having marijuana in the room and told deputies they could find it in the bottom drawer of the dresser. He also said that he brought it “all the way from Mississippi” to Indian River County for work and to share with his co-workers.

Deputies say Hemphill was relaxed and very cooperative. He stated he was “scared and that’s why he went to close the door.”

The marijuana weighed approximately 19 grams.

The subject was arrested and transported to the Indian River County Jail where he was charged with Possession less than 20 grams of Cannabis.

Hemphill was released on $500.00 bail.
