VERO BEACH, Florida – A woman said she was beaten by a Vero Beach man after she denied him sexual favors for crack cocaine, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim showed up at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach covered in blood from injuries to her face and hands, the report said.
She said 42-year-old Jerris Demontize Cross gave her crack cocaine and then wanted sexual favors in exchange for the drugs. The victim declined and tried to give the drugs back.
While inside a room at the Model 6 in Vero Beach, Cross suddenly attacked the victim. A witness asked Cross to stop and screamed for help while escorting children out of the room, according to the arrest report.
“[the victim] advised the incident occurred so quickly that before she knew it, she was being punched in the face,” the deputy said.
The victim fell to the floor while Cross continued to punch her. She made several attempts to cover her face with her hands during the attack, the report said.
A few minutes later, Cross stopped the attack, then grabbed something and left the room. The victim crawled to the door and managed to lock it. She was transported to the Indian River Medical Center by her husband.
Deputies went to Motel 6 to search for Cross, who was in the room where the alleged attack occurred.
“Once inside the room, I observed blood stains on the carpet towards the front door and blood stains on the curtains near the front door,” the deputy said.
Cross told deputies he had been asleep for at least two hours and does not know the victim, nor did any incident occur inside the room. One of the children who were present during the attack told deputies that a woman was bleeding in the room.
Cross was arrested and charged with Battery. He was transported to the county jail. Bond was set at $500.
