VERO BEACH, Florida – A woman called law enforcement from a McDonald’s drive-thru after a man hit her car multiple times, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies arrived at the Vero Beach McDonald’s, located at 745 U.S. Highway 1, where the woman pointed to the vehicle behind her. She told deputies that the car struck her.
“She stated that the vehicle struck her rear bumper a second time and over and over,” the deputy said.
Earle Gustavas Stevens, 69, was sitting in the vehicle behind the woman. When deputies asked for his driver’s license, he struggled to remove his wallet from his back pants pocket,” the report said.
Stevens handed the deputy a Florida ID card and stated he never had a driver’s license.
Deputies then observed an open bottle of liquor in a brown paper bag sitting next to Stevens. As he spoke, deputies could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath, the affidavit said.
“I’m feeling pretty good,” Stevens told deputies, according to the affidavit.
Stevens said he had been drinking, and the alcohol in the paper bag was a bottle of Jim Beam Bourbon.
However, Stevens said he never drank while driving the vehicle. Instead, he told deputies he was drinking at “stop signs.”
“He further explained that he was not drinking while the car was moving and only when he stopped for stop signs and traffic signals,” the deputy said.
When asked if he struck the vehicle in front of him in the McDonald’s drive-thru, he said, “not that I know of,” according to the report.
After completing standard road sobriety tests, the deputy determined that he was too impaired to drive. Stevens consented to a breath test and blew a .153 and .147.
He was arrested for DUI and transported to the Indian River County Jail.
