MELBOURNE, Florida – A woman who was driving a golf cart late Saturday night on Whispering Oaks Circle in Melbourne was killed.

Tammy Russell, 40, was a passenger in the cart driven by James Russell, 54, just after midnight in a grassy area behind their residence.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the golf car traveled down an embankment and overturned in a canal filled with water.

Tammy Russell was unable to escape from under the cart and drowned.

The FHP said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

James Russell escaped without injury.
